FAQs

What's the difference between a 401 (k) and an IRA?

A 401 (k) is an employer-sponsored retirement plan and you are limited to the investments the employer offers. An IRA is an individual retirement account that individuals open through a bank or a brokerage firm and it allows you to invest in many different stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.

What's the difference between a Roth and Traditional IRA?

Traditional IRA contributions are deductible from taxes and your account grows tax-deferred. You pay taxes when you withdraw your funds in retirement. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible but your account grows tax free and you pay no taxes when you withdraw your funds in retirement.

Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax deductible in the contribution year, with current income tax due at withdrawal.  Withdrawals prior to age 59 may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax in addition to current income tax.

A Roth IRA offers tax deferral on any earnings in the account. Qualified withdrawals of earnings from the account are tax-free. Withdrawals of earnings prior to age 59 or prior to the account being opened for 5 years, whichever is later, may result in a 10% IRS penalty tax. Limitations and restrictions may apply.
