We’ve received word of an uptick in scam attempts here in the Northland. Recently, scammers have targeted older adults in Northern Minnesota with the Grandparent Scam, a scheme designed to exploit family and trust. These criminals pretend to be a distressed grandchild and urgently ask for money. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.

How the Scam Works

  • You receive a phone call, email, or text from someone claiming to be your grandchild.
  • They say they’re in trouble—arrested, in an accident, or stranded in another country.
  • They beg for immediate financial help and may ask for a wire transfer, gift cards, or cash.
  • The scammer often warns you not to tell anyone, claiming the grandchild could be in danger if you do.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • The caller demands secrecy and urges you not to confirm the story with other family members.
  • They pressure you to act immediately, often creating a sense of urgency.
  • Payment is requested through unusual methods (gift cards, wire transfers, or mailing cash).
  • The caller won’t provide details or gets defensive if you ask personal questions.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Pause & Verify – Hang up and call your grandchild or another trusted family member directly.
  • Ask Questions – A scammer may struggle to answer specific family-related questions.
  • Be Skeptical – Scammers can spoof phone numbers to make it look like the call is coming from someone you know.
  • Never Send Money – Once funds are transferred, they are nearly impossible to recover.
  • Report Suspicious Activity – If you receive a call like this, contact your local police department immediately.
